About About Jul 11, 2018 10:35 PM Published https://d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net/nojusticenopride/pages/101/meta_images/original/NJNP-Black.jpg?1531363071 basic As the once radical LGBTQ+ movement was consolidated into the non-profit industrial complex, Gay Inc. - a powerful network of nonprofits, wealthy donors, and political action committees - emerged to assimilate the movement into mainstream cis-hetero systems of power, including white supremacy, patriarchy, and settler colonialism, among other systems of oppression. This shift is most visible in Pride marches and celebrations - and here in DC and around the world - what was once a call to action for the liberation of our entire community has become a hodgepodge of corporate and state-sponsored interests directed by the most privileged members of our larger community. In response to Capital Pride’s complicity with systems of oppression and its continued refusal to reflect the interests of the larger community, activists and organizers from across the District of Columbia came together in 2017 to form what is now NJNP and demand that Capital Pride respect our communities and return Pride to its radical roots of trans and queer resistance. It's Time for Capital Pride to Address Its Systemic Failure of the Queer and Trans Community FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEApril 27, 2017 media@resistthis.org 603.944.3098 Firing Bryan Pruitt Is Just the Beginning: It's Time for Capital Pride to Address Its Systemic Failure of the Queer and Trans Community WASHINGTON, DC - On Tuesday, April 25, No Justice No Pride, a collective initially formed out of ResistThis, uncovered and publicized a quote from an article Capital Pride Executive Producer Bryan Pruitt for far-right online publication RedState in May of 2016. No Justice No Pride (NJNP) is a collective of organizers and activists from across the District of Columbia (DC) that exists to fight for Trans Justice and end the LGBT “equality” movement’s complicity with systems of oppression that further marginalize Trans and Queer individuals and communities. NJNP members are black, brown, trans, gender nonconforming, queer, bisexual, indigenous, two-spirit, disabled, sex workers, currently and formerly homeless, formerly incarcerated, and white allies. Together we recognize that there can be no pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.   /about false Nationbuilder https://nojusticenopride.org /about No Justice No Pride (NJNP) is a collective of organizers and activists from across the District of Columbia (DC) that exists to fight for Trans Justice and end the LGBT “equality” movement’s complicity with systems of oppression that further marginalize Trans and Queer individuals and communities. We believe that we will not be free until the most marginalized amongst us are free, and that by prioritizing solutions that support folks facing multiple intersecting forces of oppression will lead us all to liberation. Most importantly, we believe that those most impacted by these issues need to be the ones calling the shots. We practice the DC Organizing Principles! Talk to Local Organizers! Value the opinion of D.C. organizers and use those opinions to inform decisions about actions in D.C. Check in with and consult local organizers before planning events in our city. Include D.C. organizers in a meaningful way - Bring us into the decision making process. Understand the difference between nationally focused groups based in D.C. versus their local affiliate or a local group working on that issue in the local context. Make the effort to coordinate with locals working on the ground. Advance Local Organizing! Be aware of the consequences of your actions and decisions - local organizers will deal with the repercussions from the police and other authorities long after you’re gone. Do your best to give support to local organizing - Empowering the local movement is building the movement as a whole. Include locally organized events and actions in your calendar for out-of-town activists. Ask local organizers how a national event can advance their work: Provide a training for their group or speak at their event Ask local organizers to speak at your event to connect local and national struggles Have a strategy session to build relationships and share ideas Add a local action to your mobilization plan Add a local demand to your asks Realize that one-time deals - whether mobilizations or direct service opportunities - have only limited impact when sustained commitment is what is needed to make change. One measure of success for any action held in D.C. should be whether the local organizing on that issue has been advanced in a real way Don’t Just Use Our City - Strengthen It! Support local businesses by buying tools and resources locally. Hire local organizers, trainers, artists, and activists when you have work in the area. Pay local organizers, trainers, artists, and activists a living wage. Attempt to leave the D.C. activist community stronger than when you came - there will always be a “next action” that will require similar resources, time, and energy provided by locals! Since March 2017, No Justice No Pride has been working to ensure that Capital Pride addresses our concerns, but time and time we have been dismissed. Even in the current political moment - with the Trump Administration pursuing anti-immigrant, anti-trans, anti-LGBQ2S, anti-women, anti-Black, anti-Muslim, anti-poor, and pro-white supremacist policies - Capital Pride insists on continuing business as usual, ignoring the most marginalized members of our community. We MUST fight back and bring pride back to it's roots. To this day, Capital Pride is reluctant to make systemic changes that could actually give the power of Pride back to the people whose voices and experiences are most crucial to the fight for our rights today. In June 2017, No Justice No Pride held a day of action and resistance in an effort to return pride back to its roots as a direct response to state violence, led by visionary, transgender women of color. Government fulfill their promises to the D.C. Trans Community but that they take critical steps to further protect Trans lives in the heart of the empire. But we need support. Since April (After the passage of FOSTA/SESTA) our work has looked differently and has shifted towards more towards care giving and supporting those directly impacted — namely Black & Brown Trans Women with housing, emergency care support, jail and legal support, meals, and over the summer started the Organizer In Training Project — providing stipends to Black and Brown Trans Women to learn how to organize and to advocate on their issues. This work of solidarity and mutual aid is so necessary and required in order to support our communities under attack, but it’s not enough. This is why we are stepping it up in the New Years, we will continue feeding, providing organizing stipends, meals, jail & legal support, housing and finding housing for critically impacted Trans, Non-Binary and Two Spirit people of color and we will be taking the streets strategically. This is why we can’t fall short. City Council from ever reaching a vote, instead demanding that the Council schedule a hearing for the sex work decrim bill and that the Council fully fund the NEAR Act. In the beginning of April 2018, we co-organized a Canvass in Ward 6 with other Sex Worker Advocates Coalition (SWAC) Members, Collective Action for Safe Spaces, HIPS and BYP100. With what started in 2017 quickly grew into its own program as NJNP continues to work on solutions to the issues laid out in our petition. While celebrating small victories, we continued to expand our goals and issues areas beyond:  Community Safety and Alternatives to Incarceration -Decriminalization of Sex work, roundtable around police brutality, deprioritization of arrests around solicitation - loitering - and other petty often selectively enforced laws, etc. Mayoral Accountability - Mayor Bower fulfills her campaign promises to the District of Columbia’s Trans & gender non-conforming(TGNC) and queer communities, Following Through on Equitable Access - The City reviews compliance of administrative and front line staff in all D.C. government agencies with the District’s legal protections for TGNC individuals, District of Columbia Forms Trans Community Taskforce - of TGNC community leaders and experts of color leading guidance as the city develops and sustains programs and policies that support these communities. NJNP’s efforts over the past year have brought to light the exceptional needs in the trans community for access to healthcare, housing, immigration services, spanish speaking language services, and employment. Rampant discrimination prevents many trans and GNC people from accessing services and basic needs. Understanding the countless, massive barriers that trans folx - particularly black and brown trans women - face in D.C. to access employment, housing, and other basic needs and services, we work to center those most on the margins and support each other. We must keep one another safe, fed, and housed as we fight for a world that affirms us. Trans and gender non-conforming (TGNC) communities are facing increasing levels of violence on top of barriers that have only continue to grow after the passage of FOSTA/SESTA in April 2018. Since then, NJNP has doubled-down on its work to fight back against anti-TGNC violence by providing Rapid Response Support to our familia as a crucial component of our Trans Justice Program, alongside Mutual Aid in the form of: Temporary Housing -  at the NJNP House Collective or with NJNP allies who have space — for housing unstable or whose work hours extended passed the curfew at their existing housing. Housing was already a critical issue in D.C.’s TGNC Communities before the loss of Backpage and Craigslist Personals among other sites, but the loss in income resulting from these bills have left far too many unable to pay for rent, and many who were in the process of getting housing at tgh lost their deposits. Employment - Helping people find jobs, assisting with cover letter and resume writing, and practice interviewing. Access - Helping people get IDs, correct name and gender on legal documents, open bank accounts, raise money to keep their phones on, and access alternative and natural medicines. Meals - Working with community partners and allies to source meals and ingredients and make meals for struggling TGNC Community Members who stop by NJNP. Legal Support and responding to State Terror - Supporting and advocating for our accomplices at hearings, helping folks navigate the system, raising money for jail and legal defense support, signal boosting/engaging in Public Awareness Campaigns and working with community partners, organizations and volunteer lawyers to support TGNC community members in need. In Spring and Summer 2018, NJNP began and completed a three month pilot, stipended Organizing Training Project (OTP) to develop the organizing and leadership skills of trans folks of color most directly and disproportionately impacted by violence resulting from the criminalization of sex work to organize locally impacted communities and lead the movement to decriminalize sex work and make the District of Columbia a safer space for trans and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals and communities. Organizing Training Project Pilot (OTP) is intended for community members most-impacted by structural racism, transmisogny, state violence, and other systems of power whose manifestations individually and structurally adversely affect their communities. The Pilot training period is just over three months. Currently, NJNP is supporting 3 organizers through this program and hopes to support more pending trainer and volunteer capacity, as well as funding. During the first pilot, organizers started at 10-15 hours a week and slowly increased to 25 hours a week at $16 an hour while receiving training and leadership development through learning Movement History, Story Telling, How Best to Manage 1:1 Meetings and Campaign Communications, Direct Action Skills, and Campaign Planning among others led by NJNP Organizers, Trainers, Facilitators and Volunteers. In June 2018, the organizers-in-training participating in the OTP pilot and the other TGNC Community Members they organized to join them shared their stories at Sex Workers Rise Up for Safety - a rally organized by No Justice No pride, HIPS, CASS, BYP100, Trans United Fund, and Metro DSA. Organizers are currently involved in City Wide Storytelling Project as well as working to continue and replicate the work NJNP started with their Rapid Response Support to support each other and keep each other safe, fed, and housed while working and fighting for a world that affirms us. /trans_justice false transjustice trans_justice Nationbuilder https://nojusticenopride.org /trans_justice NJNP recognizes the countless barriers that trans folx face when attempting to access basic needs, such as employment, housing, and human services. That’s why our Trans Justice Program has worked to train, employ, and provide mutual aid to young trans organizers and activists in the occupied Piscataway land (DC). Our work has grown more quickly than anticipated and I write because we need your help to keep this important movement building effort going strong. Because of the barriers that trans people face, especially black and brown trans women and trans femmine people, this community has depended disproportionately on survival sex work to meet basic needs like food and shelter. On top of the already monumental barriers faced most severely by these members of our larger LGBTQ2SIA+ family, two laws - FOSTA & SESTA - were recently passed that have had devastating impacts on our communities, including forcing many more into street-based survival sex work. In DC — according to the DC Trans Needs Assessment Survey, a survey released in 2015 that had over 500 trans participants in the DC Area — over 35% of the respondents reported of having engaged in sex work, with a majority those respondents being of color and identifying as trans woman or trans feminine. In the same survey 74% of respondents had been verbally assaulted, 42% physically assaulted, and 35% sexually assaulted, so it should be no surprise that when the issue of housing came up in the survey, 20% of those taking the survey reporting that they are currently experiencing homelessness, Those currently experiencing homelessness are significantly more likely to be HIV positive and half of those responded as homeless reported to rely “ informal and grey economic work for income (such as sex work). Since its inception in February, NJNP has worked tirelessly to support trans and queer organizing in the District of Columbia and build community and solidarity with our chapters and allied groups both nationally and internationally. In the Trump era, as trans and queer folks (especially those who are black, brown, Muslim, migrants, Native, and/or disabled) face continued attacks, we know that effective resistance to violence against us depends upon demanding more from those who claim our voices, profit from our traumas, and ignore the lived violence faced by our communities. In the face of these injustices - in conjunction with supporting the work of our local, national, and international partners - we have formed two primary programs, but need your help to sustain the work! As the once radical LGBTQ+ movement was consolidated into the non-profit industrial complex, Gay Inc. formed and continues to tirelessly work to assimilate itself into mainstream cis-hetero systems of power that depend upon white supremacy, patriarchy, settler colonialism, and other systems of oppression. /what_no_justice_no_pride_built_in_2017 false reports Nationbuilder https://nojusticenopride.org /what_no_justice_no_pride_built_in_2017 Download the summary of the first phase of our Community Storytelling Project! We are also interested in learning about how to improve services related to housing, general wellness of the community, and issues It's important that we amplify different experiences with these issues to our elected leaders and other constituents so that they can better understand the direct impacts of this legislation, and ensure that their decisions reflect the needs of those they would affect. We will cover the following topics in this survey: Fare evasion; street harassment; sex work experiences; housing; wellness; language access; and immigration-related services. Find out more about this work here.  Below are some of the stories that our organizers or supporters have submitted. If you would like to get in contact with us about opportunities to share your story publicly and/or with elected leaders fill out this form. This Action Camp will prepare participants for the fight ahead in reclaiming these legacies; with priority focus to trans people of color and former and current sex workers. Our hopes are to be able to do this over a span of around two weeks, from the week of May 19th- June 3rd. The action camp will feature workshops that range from choreography and how to plan a ball to learning critical political histories, how to organize and use direct action tactics, that will all lead up to NJNP’s June Mobilization that will feature a KiKi DMV runway ball, ‘Ball 50’; a Stonewall community kickback event — to serve as an alternative to a white washed and corporation collaborated pride festival — and several direct actions that highlight the City’s neglect for issues around housing, sex work criminalization and healthcare for the trans community. We’re currently are reaching out to groups we work with to see if yall have any workshops, trainings, clinics, events, celebrations etc that you would like to present at our Actioncamp and or if any groups would like to partner.  The Actioncamp will not be exclusive to Trans and Queer Folx but is of course intended to center trans community members, as May is all about Trans! Cis people, we need and would love your help with making this a reality as well. We are hoping to build an action(s) / prepare participants during this camp that will take place during pride weekend and beyond. The Actioncamp will start on May 19th, and carry on thru the afternoons and evenings of both weeks, we will be limited our scheduling Memorial Day weekend for Black Pride, and will be ending the actioncamp the following weekend featuring a four day long Direct Actions Tactics Micro-action camp where participants will learn climbing and blockade basics. We have various venues booked and can provide space for more workshops/events. Goals & Objectives: Plan and Host 2 week action camp with 50 participants and organizers from May to June 2018 plugging participants into local organizing and community work that is already happening. Build a space to Exchange and expand skills, experiences, knowledge, and build new relationships in the trans and queer community. Transferring knowledge from seasoned trans organizers to younger newly energized organizers. Prepare participants for direct actions and events taking place the week of pride and build a grassroots movement of activists ready to fight when the Sex Workers Advocates Coalition (SWAC) with supporting City Council Members reintroducing a bill to decriminalize sex work in DC. Logistics, Housekeeping and what else to expect: Do you have a workshop, training, skillshare etc to share with the community? We can’t do this without you!  It doesn’t have to be a workshop or skillshare, it can be a healing space, a performance, an art build, film screenings, etc, we have some sample criteria below for you to think about before submitting. You can submit a workshop or event here. What No Justice No Pride and the core planning team are providing: Overall coordination and promotion of Camp 50 to ensure as much collaboration as possible. Two weeks of trainings, skill shares, plays,  film screenings and other pre-pride festivities. Coordination & Booking of four Venues with different features. Including places for providing meals. Two Direct Action 101s, a four day long training on Direct Action Tactics such as climbing and blockades, a series of workshops on community organizing and action planning, workshops on choreography, runway & modeling and cosmetology, and (hopefully) a convergence space. Coordinating Public and Private large planning meetings during the actioncamp to plan actions around #Stonewall50 Stipends to participants who are sex workers, Trans - BIPoC. Stipends to facilitator/trainers/organizers who are from TQBIPoC communities by request. Basic logistics - PA Systems, chairs & tables, snacks up to a limit, etc What you will need to provide (*For Workshop/event submitters*): Your programming! What is it you are trying to do? What do you hope the participants wish to get out of your event? One point of contact — to talk thru the plan with the core team Facilitators, Trainers, Interpretations, etc — We have limited facilitation capacity, groups/individuals making submissions will have to figure out their own staffing. We can help provide coordination for anyone wishing to volunteer to facilitate Outreach for your event — We will include it in our schedule and promotions however inviting participants and doing turn out to your event will be on you. We will be using the hashtags #Stonewall50 and #Camp50, and are happy to cohost the event on our facebook page, feel free to reach out to emmelia@nojusticenopride.org for further social media coordination Printing Materials — We have a limited print budget, we can print additional resources for you if its needed but we encourage you to try to fundraise it. A plan for where the participants go from there. Do they plug into your work or another group? Are you hoping for participants to come to future events? Try to think thru and have a plan for how participants can benefit/plug in to your project over the course of the next few months. This is for your purposes, we don’t need to see it. We just want to encourage capacity building wherever we can! If you are submitting on behalf of an Organization and your org’s 2018 budget was greater than 85k, we ask that you contribute to and share our gofundme page to help us raise funds to provide participant stipends. We are asking groups with budgets of 85k or larger to make suggested donation starting at $100, groups with budgets greater than 120k to contribute $150, budgets greater than 160k to donate 200, etc.   Additional Info The Action Camp will span two weeks with participants having the option to select multiple courses/classes/curriculum/trainings/skillshares — gonna refer to this as courses for lack of a better word. Some of these courses will repeat to give the most amount of availability to people with scheduling conflicts, some courses may also be broken up in parts or sections; while others may be geared towards experience with beginners / 101s and more advance courses “Trainings for trainers”. I.E. (This is a hypothetical): We may feature a course called “The 5 steps to a organizing conversation”, have that be a course that is broken up over two trainings (Part I & Part II) that are for ex 2 hours long each. Then for example on the first tuesday we may offer a Part I option in the Morning and Evening, and a third option middle of the day on Saturday, then offer Part II in the middle of the Day Sunday, Tuesday Am or Tuesday PM.   Two whole weeks tho? - Since we would like to cover courses or workshops ranging from dancing/choreography and modeling to direct action trainings involving tactics, and some of these will be broken up by different days or offer multiple times to attend; we are planning / scheduling for a full two weeks. If I am helping fill a venue/space need, do I need to have it available for all of that time? - No, courses/workshops will be held at different venues, with some venues only being used for particular courses on particular dates.  Further below you will find a timeline that has dates and anticipated/confirmed venues. Will there be a way for others to plug into planning? Yes, we will be posting a call for submissions soon and will be reaching out to folks to help expand the core planning group. People who submit course submissions, ofc will be invited to the core planning group (not some exclusive group btw, just a couple of NJNP folks and others wanting to ensure this happens) Other things to note: There will be organizing and mobilizing around NJNP #Stonewall50 / Reclaim Pride related stuff (DC and Beyond) at the same time. Courses from the Action Camp may be used to help offset organizing/training. Ideally would be nice to coordinate a few mass / large meetings for this mobilizing with camp participants. Organize spaces for housing/lodging, hubs for meetings/meals/etc within DC. *We would like to do the following* to be able to raise enough money to provide stipends to a group of DC Based participants (we can expand if we get special requests from folks elsewhere who really could benefit but otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend). *We know for a lot of folks who can benefit the most from these events often aren’t able to attend due to travel costs, admission fees and the fact that often many working class, black and brown trans and queer people are more focus on spending that time obtaining resources for theirs and their loved ones day to day needs. We could help offset some costs, by ask folks of privilege to donate a sliding scale fee. We can’t do this without you!  It doesn’t have to be a workshop or skillshare, it can be a healing space, a performance, an art build, film screenings, etc, we have some sample criteria below for you to think about before submitting. You can submit a workshop or event here We will be accepting submissions up until May 7th!   Suggested Criteria — To save space on our workshop submission form we asked that any group/persons wishing to coordinate a workshop or event, to try to hit at least half of these points of criteria. If you are requesting a stipend from NJNP to do your workshop, we may ask for the criteria to be followed more strictly. NJNP believes in autonomous principles and are not wanting to box any group in, however we do wish to set a standard to ensure Camp50 benefits the Trans Community; we are not asking that all criteria is met exactly as written here, only that your event or workshop is inline or in consensus with what’s listed below (Some bullet items may not even apply for your event): It clearly benefits the trans community, particularly Black and Brown Trans Women. Your workshop or event should build off of existing campaigning, organizing and issues in the DC area. Let us know if you have questions or would like to be plugged in with any local organizing. Aligns with NJNP’s Vision — We ask that when planning your event that your goals supports the following: Creating a connected transnational movement of Trans and Queer people, led/informed by those most on the margins — Black and Brown Communities, indigenous communities, two-spirit, formerly incarcerated, disabled communities - not to box in- — Thriving and succeeding at building the world that affirms us all. Create space for most impacted Trans, nonbinary, queer, lgbtq, poc, sex workers, folks on the margins to be able to have public space and attention/being centered in conversations, advocacy, media; folks whose politics are more radical than liberal/conservative Flip institutional power of queer and Trans communities away from “established” to most impacted. Providing counternarratives to what is (b/c of the way systems are structured) has just one very loud/heard narrative Follows and adheres to DC Local Organizing Principles. Your group is lead or has trans folks in leadership or your workshop/event will have trans facilitators or organizers. Your group is lead by or has in leadership Black and Brown Trans and Queer folks or your workshop/event will have Black and Brown facilitators or organizers. You don’t fuck with the police.
